Background
The City of Grand Junction has been working with the Grand Valley Irrigation Company (GVIC) to improve drainage and pedestrian facilities on the south side of Patterson Road from 24 ½ Road to 25 ½ Road. The strip of land directly south of the existing roadway is owned by the Grand Valley Irrigation Company and was historically an open ditch that conveyed both irrigation and drainage as part of the Independent Ranchman’s Ditch facilities. The City completed a flood mitigation project in 2008-2010 that piped the Independent Ranchman’s Ditch along Patterson Road through the Mesa Mall area. The surface of the corridor currently serves as a utility corridor and maintenance access for the irrigation facilities. The City has identified the need for additional pedestrian facilities along this section as an important pedestrian corridor between Pomona Elementary School and the retail establishments near Mesa Mall. This segment was identified in the City’s 2023 Pedestrian & Bicycle Plan as a high priority. The City worked with GVIC in 2024-2025 to develop a plan and finalize agreements that can support the pedestrian facilities and the current irrigation, drainage, and utility uses.
Schedule
This project is scheduled to be constructed in 2026.
Proposed Improvements
This proposed project will install a 10-foot-wide detached sidewalk with connections to bus stops and adjacent developments on the south side of Patterson Road. The improvements will include rock landscaping and pedestrian lighting to improve aesthetics and provide a safe multi-use corridor.
