Phone Interview and Testing

If you pass the initial application screening, you'll be invited to schedule a telephone interview. This initial interview will last about 15-20 minutes and is usually comprised of about five questions. Visit the City of Grand Junction website for a lot of helpful information about our community.

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT):

After your phone interview, you will enter testing. We complete a variety of tests for applicants. This includes a physical ability assessment, as well as aptitude testing and a suitability evaluation, intended to assess your compatibility with this line of work. GJFD is a fully licensed Candidate Physical Ability Testing (CPAT) site for internal applicants. We offer two orientation sessions, two practice testing sessions, and the final test. If candidates elect not to attend all five sessions, they will need to sign a waiver stating that sessions were made available.

Testing and oral board interviews can be scheduled on the same day.

Oral Board Interview

An Oral Board is a formal interview with a panel comprised of sworn and civilian staff with the City of Grand Junction. Come prepared to discuss what you've learned about our agency, why you are interested in a career with the Fire Department, and how your past experiences have prepared you for this job. (HINT: Schedule a ride along with our crews and get a firsthand perspective of what a day at Grand Junction Fire is like.)

Background Investigation

This essential step takes approximately three to four weeks to complete. During this step, we'll take an in-depth look at your general character, work history, driving history, and criminal background. Because of the high level of community trust and responsibility necessary to work at the Fire Department, there are extra steps, as well; we'll complete a Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA), suitability/psychological testing, and get your fingerprints.

Executive Interview

You're nearing the end of the process! Time to meet with our executive staff for a conversation about what we expect of our employees, and what you expect out of your career. If you're given a conditional offer of employment, we'll schedule a time for your medical and drug screen, as well as a psychological screening.
