Grass Off-Leash Dog Park at Las Colonias Will Close for Season
With the start of fall and cooler weather, the east side and middle sections of the grass-off-leash dog park at Las Colonias will close on Monday, October 16, 2023, and reopen in June of 2024. While these sections are closed, the dog park on the west side is open year-round for owners and their furry friends. The park was designed with multiple fenced sections to help keep grass areas healthy, while still providing year-round service for community members and visitors.
Each year, the city dog parks undergo a rotation of opening and closing to help keep the grass and soil healthy for the following year. This is done when the grass is dormant in fall, winter, and early spring to maintain the quality and longevity of the turf. If not given a break from the impact of dogs enjoying running, jumping, and playing fetch, the grass has difficulty recovering.
In addition to the dog park at Las Colonias, the city provides another dog park for community members at Canyon View Park on the north side of Grand Junction. This dog park and the one at Las Colonias are the only areas where pets are allowed off-leash. Mesa County Animal Control Services enforces the leash law within city limits including issuing citations to owners with pets who are off-leash outside of those designated off-leash dog parks at Las Colonias and Canyon View.
