On January 31, 2025, at approximately 5:40 a.m., officers with the Grand Junction Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the area of N 12th Street and Patterson Road on a vehicle that was reported stolen a week prior. The vehicle eluded officers and a short time later, officers received a report of a rollover crash at the corner of 27 ½ Road and 27 ½ Court. Officers discovered this was the same vehicle that eluded the traffic stop.
After the crash, the driver of the rolled vehicle attempted to enter a nearby home but was unsuccessful. Officers quickly arrived on scene, and the suspect fled into a small field and was taken into custody without further incident. The Grand Junction Fire Department transported the suspect, identified as Gilberto Calvillo-Rodriguez (age 21), to a hospital for evaluation of injuries related to his crash. Once released from the hospital, Calvillo-Rodriguez was transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility on outstanding warrants and the following offenses:
- Vehicular Eluding
- 2nd Degree Motor Vehicle Theft
- Hit and Run Failed to Remain at Scene
- 1st Degree Criminal Trespass of Inhabited Dwelling
- Criminal Attempt
The Grand Junction Police Department believes this to be an isolated incident with no ongoing danger to the public. There is no further information available at this time.
