[ARCHIVED] The City of Grand Junction Installs Art at 24 Road and G Road Roundabout

Bear sculpture gets placed on roundabout

The City of Grand Junction, in collaboration with local artist Jeff Bates, installed artwork in the roundabout at the intersection of 24 Road and G Road on Friday, September 20, 2024. The completed sculptures include a 20’ tall tree with an eagle perched on top, a bull elk, a mule deer, and a standing bear. The roundabout area will be segmented into three sections, with each wildlife sculpture positioned at the center of its respective section, encircling the tree.

The City’s Commission on Arts and Culture issued a call for artists in Feb. 2024.  After extensive evaluation of all proposals, the Commission selected the proposal from Jeff Bates, a local artist residing in Fruita. His artwork is featured in four distinct traffic circles on the Western Slope along with installations in multiple states and countries. His artwork is made from mild steel and has a life expectancy of over 100 years, needing little maintenance due to the high strength and durability of the medium.

In his final proposal for the 24 Road and G Road project, Bates stated, “For this project, my idea is a tribute to the wildlife of the area. Area wildlife, particularly big game, is not only abundant, but is usually the highlight of any resident’s day when seen.” More information on the artist.
